Close your email down after you’ve checked it and sent any emails that needed to go out. This isn’t 7-11. It’s a time suck you don’t need and a distraction you allow to continue because of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). If it’s important, they’ll call you. If it’s not, it can wait.
Stop reading or watching the news in the first 3 hours of your day. It’s not helping you get more clients or build a skill set to advance your career. If it’s important, you’ll see it later in the day. Again, FOMO is at play here.
Limit yourself to social media consumption before work or after work or on your lunch break, unless you’re a social media marketeer. It’s a time suck and if you’re honest with yourself, a distraction. Unless you’re getting knowledge about advancing your skills or scheduling content with key performance indicators geared towards your goals,; it’s a hobby and it’s affecting your work. #FOMO
Stop having meetings with people who aren’t helping your achieve your goals. This includes happy hour, lunch, golf tournaments, and workshops. If you’re really honest about these activities, you’re doing it because it’s social and it’s an excuse to get out of the office.
Consume skill building content. Don’t tell me you aren’t a reader as if that gets you off the hook for your responsibility to educate yourself. You owe it to yourself and your community to be a better human being than the person you were 5 years ago, 10 years ago. Audiobooks, podcasts (The F Word Podcast), and YouTube videos all provide information for skill building and you’ll never have to crack a book. Pro Tip: Listen to an audiobook while you’re doing dishes/laundry. Multitasking #FTW.
